Global ports and logistics multinational DP World is collaborating with the UK’s development finance institution British International Investment (BII) to deliver the project.
Project Description
The project is set to transform Senegal into a major centre for global trade. Phase 1 of the project includes an 840 m quay and a 5 km channel capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships.
The construction in this phase will create a capacity to handle 1.2-million twenty-foot equivalent units a year. Phase 2 will add a further 410 m quay.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create more than 1 800 jobs during construction, and once operational, is expected to support 2.3-million jobs across Senegal, including 22 000 tied directly to expanded trade.
Capital Expenditure
$1.2-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Dredging on the 5-km-long shipping canal started in December 2024.
